Lego at Lemkus
When we were founded by Jack Lemkus in 1935, our earliest vision was to offer a variety of sporting equipment, along with collectibles. So, for us — toys that have a storied heritage are part of our own provenance as a brand. In 1932, just three years before our own inception, a small Danish toy brand was being established, and it would go on to change the way we understand interactivity and engineering in the realm of toys. We’re obviously talking about Lego, and we’re incredibly excited to be bringing this iconic brand into the Lemkus family, for kids, hobbyists and tinkerers alike.

Initially a wooden toy company, Lego’s pioneering brick design, using a unique interlocking mechanism, opened up a world of possibilities for modular, customisable play. Spanning their many decades as a company, their innovation remains one of the greatest stories of a simple idea, with fantastic implications. its said that over 400 billion combinations exists with the versatile Lego brick system; and many generations of kids were raised to unleash their imagination across Lego’s evolving offering, from the iconic Star Wars sets, to Super Mario, Harry Potter sets – to the brand’s in-house worldbuilding, across a variety of contexts and environments. Today, Lego is one of the very few ‘toy’ brands with a generation-spanning community; from adult collectors using sophisticated architectural and artistic sets, to young kids learning through Lego for developing their fine motor skills and creative problem solving.

In recent years, Lego’s commitment to environmental sustainability has become part of their central vision — with the company advancing by using plant-based plastics for some bricks and striving to make all products and packaging sustainable by 2030. Throughout it all, Lego has remained a family-owned company, and we’re really proud to be introducing Lego to our own multi-generational Lemkus family.

If you’ve been keeping up with our latest campaigns and cultural movements (we hope you have), you’ll have noticed that motorsports and car culture have been front and centre in our expression of Cape Town’s heritage. We’re big on aligning our vision for streetwear, sneaker culture and sports with motorsports — from spinning, to taxi culture and more, this is a creative thread that we’re going to keep pulling at, as we continue telling Lemkus community stories from season to season.

It's only fitting, then, that our initial Lego drop emphasises our love for cars, as we bring our community some iconic pieces from Lego’s continued Fast & Furious collaboration, Speed Champions AMG Collection and something special from the Lego Professional Line, the Mercedes Benz G-500. All available in-store and online on Lemkus.com - Friday, 20th September 2024.
