Nike x Air Afrique: Air Max RK61
Nike has teamed up with Paris-based creative collective Air Afrique to turn history into a modern classic. The result? The Air Max RK61 — a dress shoe silhouette that fuses heritage, craft, and innovation, all while keeping comfort front and center.

The RK61 is more than a shoe — it’s a journey. Named after Air Afrique’s flight code, RK, and founding year, 1961, it nods to the airline that connected West African nations and the diaspora. Design details take cues from aviation history: a jet engine-inspired Air Max unit, morse code on the outsole spelling “Air Afrique,” a zipper pull featuring the original logo, and a jacquard sock liner reminiscent of vintage aircraft seats. Classic moccasin vibes meet Nike Air technology, marrying elegance with effortless wearability.

“The concept of Air is about more than flight — it’s about cultural elevation, connection, and shared memory,” says Ahmadou-Bamba Thiam from Air Afrique. “We wanted the RK61 to reflect that journey, from heritage to human connection.”

The Première Classe campaign brings this story to life, featuring legends who define Afro-diasporic excellence across generations: Didier Drogba, Oumou Sangaré, Marie-Josée Ta Lou-Smith, and Mme Daba Traoré, a former Air Afrique employee. It’s a celebration of movement, culture, and legacy — all captured in a silhouette you can wear.
